Nicole Ari Parker, an American actress who has appeared in film and television and on stage, is most well-known for portraying Teri Joseph, the fiery attorney in the show on Showtime called Soul Food. When she got married, she changed her name to Nikki Kodjoe. As a child within Baltimore, Maryland, she was always interested in acting. When she participated in an Maryland high school contest in her early years of education she received the award for the most outstanding actress. She received her degree in acting at New York University after working in the Washington Ballet Company' as well as performing in the theatre. Contractor was born in Mumbai in India and grew up in Nigeria from the time she was seven. She'd been exposed to a lot of travel and cultures from a early age. The boarding school she attended was in London from seven to nine years of age, and then her family moved towards Toronto, Canada, where she lived for the bulk of her childhood and young adulthood. Contractor was a student and a classical dancer in Toronto. The Etobicoke School of the Arts (a public high school that specializes in the arts) she studied dance and theatre. Contractor began her acting career at 16, following nearly 10 years of dance. After she completed high school, she was offered a full scholarship for tuition to University of Toronto where she pursued theatre studies with a double diploma in sociology and psychology. Contractor was given the lead role in Pericles following a brief time in University. She was a part of the audition for the part in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Ontario Canada) and was awarded. The play was well-received throughout the 92 productions she appeared in. The play won her the award in 2002 for the most outstanding production of the Year by Canadian Critics. The conservatory at Stratford accepts eight men as well as four females along with a couple of other people for a 20 weeks of crash courses. Contractor was offered a place for the next season and was given the role of Hermia.
